I had low expectations for this film having glanced at the reviews and listening to the hoopla. But I really think Gilliam has hit a home run. Unlike his prior films, this work has gotten back to a tight plot, with well constructed characters that ties into knowledge that we all share: fairy tales. The movie, while not a series of fairy tales is sort of a bio-pic centered on the brothers Grimm. Will and Jake are travelling witch hunters in 18th century French-occupied Germany. Again, a tip of the hat to Gilliam for his love of historical recreation (i.e. the French torture chamber including a string quartet). In any case, I don't want to spoil the movie. I will say this. The movie is filled with hints of Grimm brothers tales, all that could be viewed as seeds for their stories later in life.
